20 Google Apps to Use During a Jigsaw Lesson

Throughout 2024 the Evolving Educators Team will provide 24 tips for subscribers on how to integrate Google tools into various educational environments. Tip #2 is titled 20 Apps to Use During a Jigsaw Lesson. The Jigsaw Method (Visible Learning MetaX) is an incredibly effective strategy to engage students in the topic at hand and challenge them to take ownership of their learning. Coupled with Google apps, a well prepared Jigsaw lesson can ensure students meet established learning objectives.

The Jigsaw Method is a cooperative learning strategy that tasks students to work together in small groups to become experts on different subtopics within a larger topic. The days-long lesson will promote collaboration, communication, critical thinking and self-confidence. Students will evolve their research skills and ability to present their finds with technology. Steps for Implementation:

        1. Choose a suitable topic:

• Select a topic that can be divided into subtopics.
• Use online resources for research and content (websites, videos, podcasts, articles, etc.).
• Consider student interests and preferences through conduction surveys on Google Forms or Google Classroom. 
  
  2. Divide students into groups:
• Form home groups of 4-6 students with diverse backgrounds.
• Assign each student a unique subtopic within their home group.

1. Provide learning materials:

• Share resources digitally for each subtopic (online articles, videos, e-books, interactive websites).
• Use online platforms for collaboration and discussion such as Gmail, Groups, Docs, Meet, Classroom, Chat, or Keep. 
  
  3. Expert groups:
• Students meet virtually on Google Meet or in-person with others assigned the same subtopic (from different home groups).
• They discuss, research, and present their findings using Docs, Earth, Arts and Culture, Bard, YouTube, Search, Lens, News, Scholar, or Podcasts.
  
  4. Return to home groups:
• "Experts" return to their home groups and teach their assigned subtopic.
• Use interactive tools for sharing knowledge such as Jamboard or Drawings.
  
  5. Assessment:
• Use a Google Form online quizzes or discussions to assess individual and group understanding.
• Create collaborative projects or presentations using Google Slides, Google Sheets, or Google Sites.

Additional Tips:

• Provide clear instructions and expectations for each stage.
• Monitor student progress and offer support as needed.
• Encourage peer feedback and reflection.
